It has been 25 years since the Berlin Wall came down, and Airbnb – the website for private, short-term lettings – has used a tale from the Iron Curtain in a new campaign. The focal point of the activity is an animated video telling a supposedly true story of a German who returned to Berlin for the first time since 1987. Thanks to Airbnb, he ended up being housed by a former East Berlin border guard, making for a memorable catch-up about old times. It’s a sweet film and already has more than two million hits on YouTube, with only minimal complaints from commentators angry that a US corporation has co-opted such an emotive event for commercial gain.
