J. Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather’s media arm, the Network,

are preparing to hold joint negotiations with media owners next month as

the sister agencies move towards a merged media offer under their

parent, WPP.

For the past month, media buyers from both agencies have had regular

meetings and put together plans for clients in preparation for the 1998

TV negotiations, which begin in August, and press buying for later this

year.

A source close to WPP said: ’There will not be any railroading of

clients into following a particular media policy for the whole

group.’

JWT and the Network made their first public appearance together with a

joint bid in April for the Central Office of Information’s pounds 55

million business. Mandy Pooler, managing director of the Network, and

Mike Wood, head of JWT’s media division, acted as joint heads of the

pitch.

It is believed that Wood and Pooler will initially be joint managing

directors of the merged media operation, once a new chief executive has

been appointed.

A shortlist of candidates has been drawn up and a decision is expected

to be announced shortly.
