About Greater London Authority
About the Greater London Authority
The Greater London Authority (GLA) is a public sector administrative body for Greater London. With a directly elected executive (the Mayor of London, currently Boris Johnson), the GLA also comprises the elected 25-member London Assembly. Based at City Hall on the south side of the River Thames near Tower Bridge, the GLA employs more than 800 staff.
The GLA has an annual budget of £17 billion and sets a budget both for itself and three other statutory bodies – Transport for London, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority. The GLA is funded mostly by grants from central government but also by council tax.
Decision-making rests primarily with the Mayor of London who is the GLA’s executive. However, in some cases, decisions are delegated to the GLA’s corporate management team or the Mayoral team. ‘Novel, contentious or repercussive decisions’, relating to policy, for example, must be made by the Mayor.
The 25 strong London Assembly publicly examines Mayoral policies and programmes through committee meetings, plenary sessions, site visits and investigations. In addition, the Assembly questions the Mayor ten times a year at Mayor’s Question Time.
A wide range of jobs and opportunities are available at the GLA. Staff benefits include 30 days annual leave, an incremental salary scheme, a career average pension scheme and health screening. In addition a range of flexible working arrangements are possible including a flexible hours’ scheme, job-sharing and remote working.
The GLA invests heavily in learning and development for staff. There are a range of professional, career and personal development courses on offer. GLA employees also benefit from a comprehensive induction programme, leadership development opportunities, a mentoring programme and secondments.
