About Independent Age
About Independent Age
Independent Age is a charity aimed at improving the lives of older people in the UK and Ireland through advice and support. Formed in 1863, Independent Age has around 90 staff and 1,500 volunteers. Its head office is in West Kensington, in West London.
Independent Age supports people who are over the state retirement age and in 2015 reached more than 11,000 older people across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Services are varied. The charity’s advice and information service offers expert personalised support by phone and email to almost 4,000 older people and their families each year.
Around 25,000 older people and their families receive information and support via the charity’s range of free publications and detailed information guides. Independent Age’s benefit advisers also provide detailed assessments and casework support to those who need it.
Practical information and advice for the over-65s is also provided through the charity’s Wise Guides, on issues such as staying independent and getting the most from later life.
The charity’s 1,500 volunteers form the core of the its befriending services which offer regular face-to-face or telephone support to those who are lonely or isolated. Independent Age also runs a popular telephone book and discussion group called TalkTime.
Independent Age relies on voluntary donations to fund its work. The charity raises funds in varied ways. These include grant-making trusts and other institutional funders, major donors, legacies, fundraising events, challenge events such as marathons and cycle rides, direct mail and telephone appeals and donor recruitment campaigns.
Independent Age’s new 2015-2020 strategy will see a major expansion of its activities. The charity will focus on supporting older people in greatest need – often the ‘oldest old’, their families and carers. Investment will enhance its printed and online information while also significantly increasing the volume of calls to the charity’s telephone advice service.
The aim is also to develop an integrated face-to-face and telephone befriending service, including piloting new ways of providing services to reduce loneliness. Policy and campaigning work will continue to be expanded and linked more explicitly to service provision. Marketing and media functions will grow.
A new structure will be implemented to deliver this strategy. Many new posts will be in Independent Age’s services team but there will also be vacancies in fundraising and organisational development.
