Promoting and defending vital policies
You’ll play a crucial role in promoting and defending the department’s policies – everything from the UK’s leading role in tackling climate change to protecting and enhancing workers’ rights.
We’re looking for bright, motivated individuals who enjoy picking up the phone to make the government’s case and have the news judgment to detect which stories and consumer features will fly. You’ll be able to embrace innovation and communicate using a wide range of traditional and emerging media channels to target the right audiences.
Whether you join us as a Media or a Public Relations Officer, you’ll work as part of a specialist team. You will need to be able to deal effectively with – and influence – a broad range of people both inside the department and across government, including No10, Treasury and the Department for Exiting the European Union, as well as the media.
Each role will have its own individual list of responsibilities, but you’ll be expected to:
- Work with journalists, bloggers and other key influencers to inform and educate the public on all aspects of the department’s work
- Spot potential communications risks and opportunities and issue swift, robust and appropriate responses at short notice and under pressure
- Work closely with policy and ministerial teams on breaking news and longer-term PR ideas, as well as ministerial visits
- Play an active role in departmental campaigns, such as Shared Parental Leave and National Minimum and Living Wage
- Deliver PR in partnership with a range of public and private sector stakeholders in support of Government campaigns
- Provide timely media handling advice to ministers and senior officials on sensitive, complex and high-profile issues
You will need:
- A background in journalism, media or public relations and an interest in current affairs and politics
- Self-confidence and the ability to thrive in an often pressurised environment
- The ability to work at pace and experience of a diverse range of consumer, trade, online and traditional media
- Excellent news judgement and a sharp eye for a news hook or feature
- First-class writing skills. Able to write clean, crisp copy to tight deadlines
- A creative mind that can identify opportunities and risks for the department
- A sound understanding of social media and engaging digital content
