This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and motivated communicator to become a key part of the award-winning, busy external communications team at the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

As our work touches everyday lives of ordinary working people and communities, we need the very best communications professionals working in our team. Working in a high-profile, fast moving campaigns team, you will help tell the story of the Department’s flagship policies, both new and ongoing. Our marketing team works on diverse campaigns, targeting a range of audiences across all media channels. These include giving local communities new powers to shape their own futures, empowering tenants to claim their rights to higher property standards and firing up the Northern Powerhouse and Midlands Engine. MHCLG is at the heart of the Government’s agenda.

Our communications team is made up of a media and PR team, campaigns and marketing, strategic communications, insight and evaluation and digital. This is a rich and rewarding role which provide the opportunity to work with a diverse range of people including Ministers, policy officials and communications colleagues from across Whitehall. 

Head of Campaigns & Marketing: 

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, ambitious and highly motivated senior leader who is enthusiastic about campaigns & marketing. Our campaigns target a range of audiences across all media channels. These currently range in value from low cost to several million pounds. 

This post calls for an exceptional track record in building high performing teams and delivering above and below the line marketing including gathering audience insight, creative development and campaign planning. 

You will need excellent understanding of channels, especially digital and social media, together with an appreciation of how to deal with high profile and sensitive issues. In return you will work with some of the UK’s best creative agencies. 

As a member of the senior communications team you will provide professional advice to Ministers and senior officials on all potential and ongoing marketing campaigns and play a key role in the Government Communications Service (GCS). 

You will also need exceptional influencing skills and the ability to cut through a variety of competing priorities. You will be an expert in building good working relationships in pressured environments and will be a key link between different parts of the communications directorate – eg press, digital and internal. 

The role is responsible for leadership of: 

  • All paid-for campaigns and marketing activity – this includes being the lead on cross-Government campaigns where MHCLG is a partner. 
  • Procuring communications services accounting for the great majority of the directorate’s programme spend. 
  • The ERG & Professional Assurance process for advertising and marketing spend 
  • Maintaining corporate identity and branding 
  • The Department’s marketing team 
  • You will also make a major contribution to MHCLG’s communications strategy and budget projections. 

Ideally you will be educated to degree level and hold marketing qualifications. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate considerable senior leadership of marketing with experience in delivering cost effective campaigns.
