We are looking for experienced media officers to join the team, drawing up innovative communications strategies, handle fast-breaking news stories and win the trust of senior officials as well as ministers at an unprecedented time in government communications.

You will have a track record in delivering high-profile comprehensive communications packages. You will also have excellent news judgment, political awareness and communication skills.

The talented and busy BEIS press office is staffed by a team of committed, professional communicators. As a member of the well-regarded professional Government Communication Service, you will have the opportunity to develop your professional skills with formal and informal training and mentoring. 

Key responsibilities: 

As part of a team you will:

Create multi-channels media plans to ensure activities reflect policy developments and the emerging news agenda and contribute to the wider communications strategy and the goals of BEIS Ministers and the Government Communication Service (GCS) 

Work constructively with senior policy colleagues and partners to gain expert opinion while being an ambassador for the BEIS comms team to the rest of the department 

Provide considered communications advice to policy teams, special advisers and ministers on new, developing and existing policy – providing constructive challenge where necessary 

Demonstrate excellent written and editing skills to ensure quality and timely press releases, rebuttals and lines to take in response to developing stories. 

Analyse media monitoring results and evaluate media strategies to inform future proactive and reactive media campaigns 

Participate in the out-of-hours duty rota providing an on-call service to members of the media. 

Person specification: 

Experience of working in a fast-paced media office, with highly effective media, rebuttal and crisis management skills 

Excellent written and oral communications as well as editing skills 

Sharp news sense, excellent judgement, strong political savvy and outstanding communications skills with the ability to provide convincing communications advice at senior level 

A passion for and deep knowledge of modern communication methods, digital communication and social media in particular with the desire to bring news way of working to the team 

Experience of developing strategies and evaluation in a news environment and incorporating lessons learned into new communications strategies
