Haymarket Business Media’s award-winning B2B brand Horticulture Week is the leading provider of high-value business information for the £25bn UK horticulture and landscaping industries.

We are now looking for an editor to lead our coverage of the market - and help drive the next stage of this 178-year-old brand’s development.

The brand’s editorial channels encompass multiple daily and weekly email bulletins delivering news and in-depth analysis, business leads trackers, a suite of annually-updated industry rankings, technical data products, website, monthly print magazine and more.  Brand extensions include an annual business awards programme, roundtables and industry conference.

The editor is responsible for overseeing each of the editorial channels both from a strategic and operational point of view, while managing a seven-strong editorial team.  In addition they are expected to support client relationships and work with the senior business director to ensure commercial success and the growth of the brand’s events.

Role Summary

To be the day-to-day leader of the Horticulture Week editorial brand across online, print, live events and content solutions. Develop a culture and systems to deliver efficient, relevant and engaging content with a view to growing and developing the brand to be bigger and better.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities 

  • Lead an editorial team to produce content for print and online. Namely, a website with daily news and analysis, daily and weekly bulletins, monthly print magazine, supplements and/or special reports.
  • Represent the brand at live events, roundtables, awards and other events as required
  • Initiate, develop and deliver innovative content ideas for a variety of media platforms that help extend the brand’s reach and engagement.
  • Establish a clear and concise overarching annual editorial vision, including short- and long-term goals, and convey this to the team and other departments in brand meetings.
  • Engage with the website’s performance in terms of monthly LIUs and HEUs, ensuring agreed targets are achieved and actively work to increase the numbers to ensure the yearly milestones are achieved.
  • Work with colleagues across departments to achieve reach & engagement goals across social media, the web and live events, to support the brand’s commercial success.
  • Maintain solid market awareness in order to identify new opportunities through which to expand the brand’s scope and visibility.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and own the development of thought leadership.
  • Manage implementation of new projects and launches including the H&S product launch
  • Attract, hire, develop and manage the performance of people, coaching and communicating the business needs in order to ensure the team is fully effective.
  • Manage the editorial budget while monitoring spend per month
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of current editorial processes and best practices, sharing information across the group.
  • Liaise regularly with commercial and events teams to ensure brand goals are aligned and commercial initiatives are supported by editorial to help achieve brand commercial success
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the post and aligned with the brand’s focus on growth.

Key Requirements

  • Significant experience in a senior editorial role with a successful B2B publication that is distributed both online and in print.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management experience
  • Ability to produce highest-quality exclusive editorial content commanding premium subscription rates
  • Leadership and team management experience, alongside an ability to foster a productive and efficient working environment.
  • A proven ability to work effectively under stringent budgetary and deadline requirements.
  • A proven ability to prioritise and juggle new projects with routine editorial activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply discretion and judgment in evaluating implications of publication and information release to internal and external audiences.
  • Background in, a working knowledge of, and passion for the Horticulture industry
  • Willingness to travel across the UK where required
