The Department for International Trade (DIT) was created three and a half years ago, with responsibility for promoting British trade and investment around the world, as well as coordinating and delivering a new trade policy for the UK outside the EU. DIT helps UK businesses to export, secures inward and outward investment, negotiates market access and trade agreements and champions free trade. The work of the department has never been more crucial. For the first time in over 40 years we have an independent trade policy, with our department responsible for building the capability to use this to take advantage of the opportunities presented through leaving the EU.

We are looking for a senior communications professional to join our leadership team as Director of Communications. This a broad and exciting role for an experienced communications professional and offers the opportunity to work at the heart of the Government’s agenda as we begin to operate the UK’s independent trade policy.

The Director of Communications is a senior leadership role within DIT and the wider Government Communication Service (GCS). You will primarily be responsible for delivering the Secretary of State for International Trade’s communication priorities and turning the Department’s and wider Government’s policies into action by delivering high quality communication and marketing campaigns.

You will have a key role in leading your team through the changes to the Government Communication Service’s operating model. Alongside your departmental leadership role you will also have a crucial role in providing visible, inclusive and engaging leadership across the wider profession.

You will be a senior communications professional who can create practical and innovative responses to complex issues, with the ability to set creative strategies and campaigns, as well as respond to events as they unfold. You will be committed to developing a high performing team, raising standards and implementing the most modern communication techniques. You will have exceptional stakeholder management and influencing skills and have an ability to successfully navigate complex environments and deliver through effective and collaborative partnerships.
