As Senior Campaign Manager, This is Engineering, you will lead our pioneering pan-profession campaign that seeks to change perceptions of engineering careers in order to address the critical skills and diversity shortfall. 

Engineering matters. It underpins our daily lives, drives economic growth, plays a critical role in addressing major societal challenges and helps ensure our readiness for the future, from providing a sustainable supply of food, water and clean energy, to advancing healthcare, and keeping us safe and secure. Yet the UK has a shortfall of 59,000 engineers every year, only 12% professional engineers in the UK are female, and only 9% are from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

As the UK’s national academy for engineering and technology, a charity and a Fellowship, the Royal Academy of Engineering brings together an unrivalled community of leading businesspeople, entrepreneurs, innovators and academics from every part of engineering and technology to deliver public benefit. As part of our commitment to building a sustainable society and inclusive economy, we are working to boost the numbers and diversity of those entering engineering careers. 

Since its launch in January 2018, the campaign has successfully prompted an 85% increase in consideration of engineering as a career among teenagers, and a greater increase among groups currently underrepresented in the profession. Drawing on your extensive experience of marketing, understanding of effective engagement with young people, and creative flair, you will shape the campaign’s next phase and grow its impact, with input from agencies and colleagues across the communications and engagement department. 

While at its core This is Engineering is a digital marketing campaign, you will bring broad knowledge of communications disciplines to the role to deliver a truly integrated multi-channel communications campaign. Collaborative and adept at managing a wide range of stakeholder relationships, you will also work with colleagues and partners to ensure This is Engineering messages cut through at different stages of a young person’s journey towards a career, including in conversations with their teachers and parents. Analytical, insight-driven and with an eye for detail, you will keep abreast of the latest available research into the skills, diversity and perception change challenge, routinely identify opportunities to improve the campaign’s effectiveness, and evaluate and report on the campaign in line with best practice.   

You will have exceptional project management skills to draw all strands of activity together and manage the campaign budget, and will work effectively with a steering group of Academy Fellows and the senior leadership team to manage risks and maximise opportunities.
