The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is a non-profit think-tank aiming to support informed debate on energy and climate change issues in the UK. It is funded by philanthropic foundations and works with an Advisory Board that includes expert academics, MPs and Peers from a range of parties and backgrounds, and civil society in the broadest sense.

We are looking for a digital communications professional, with 5-6 years’ experience, to develop and implement a new strategy for ECIU.

We want to better reach our key audiences of journalists, politicians and stakeholders providing evidence-based information on climate change and the UK’s journey towards its net zero emissions target.

2021 is a particularly critical year for climate change with the UK’s hosting of the COP26 summit and there is a significant and growing interest in these issues. ECIU generates a steady stream of relevant content in the form of reports, blogs and infographics, and we’re keen to optimise these for digital channels.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in digital communications/marketing, who can put in place effective monitoring, identify and target audiences as well as create basic content working with other members of our communications team. We’re also keen to draw on digital expertise to inform our approach to online disinformation.

Ideally you will have some knowledge and experience of climate-related issues already, but for the right candidate with knowledge of how to reach our key audiences this is certainly not necessary. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate an ability to approach communications strategically, with desired outcomes determining activities.

You will need to be a fast learner and excellent project manager.   In a small team such as ECIU’s, staff need to be flexible, to respond quickly and confidently when events demand, to cover each other’s functions when needed, and to take initiative without waiting for direction. The successful candidate will be a proven self-starter and team player.

Key responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing a holistic digital strategy, responding to audience analysis and supporting ECIU’s overarching goals
  • Creation of comprehensive online engagement plans to support ECIU’s key areas of work
  • Advising on optimisation of ECIU content (including written briefings, blogs and reports) for digital channels
  • Oversight of paid audience reach across social media platforms, particularly Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Putting in place digital monitoring systems (e.g. Google Analytics, Twitter Analytics), identifying opportunities for improving metrics
  • Mapping and monitoring ongoing effectiveness/reach of ECIU digital activity (Twitter, LinkedIn, newsletters, website content, search) and advising on ways to support reach
  • Engagement with stakeholders and platforms on challenge of online disinformation

Experience and Competencies

  • A genuine interest in the mission and values of ECIU
  • 5-6 years of experience in digital communications, social media account management and data-driven digital marketing
  • Experience of engaging journalists, politicians and stakeholders online
  •  Experience in audience insight, segmentation and audience list management
  • Hands-on experience of Twitter mapping and targeting (non-paid and paid), LinkedIn targeting (non-paid and paid), SEO, Google Analytics
  • Ability to manage projects and ongoing streams of work

  • Knowledge of climate or broader environmental issues
  • Knowledge of and interest in political landscape
  • Knowledge of climate change, key players and issues
  • Experience of reaching international audiences

Terms and Conditions:

This full-time position is offered as a one-year contract. It is possible that the post will continue beyond one year.

Salary is £50k per year, depending on experience.

This is advertised as a full-time position, but we are open to making the role part-time with flexible working arrangements. The ECIU team has been mainly working from home over the past few months and we envisage that will continue for weeks and potentially some months to come. Notionally, the post-holder work from ECIU’s central London office. Some degree of flexibility is necessary, with occasional out-of-hours work needed and setting ‘getting the job done’ as a priority – but this flexibility works both ways.   Travel within the UK may be necessary from time to time. Holiday entitlement is 30 days per year, plus statutory holidays. ECIU also provides an auto-enrolment pension scheme with Aviva.

How to apply

Please send a CV and one-page cover letter to before midnight on Saturday 20 March 2021. Interviews will be held in the final week of March, with the aim of the successful applicant starting around April.   Please also include examples of digital content you have created be that tweets, graphics or other forms.

Please note only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

All applications will be treated confidentially. We will store your information in our internal database unless you specifically request otherwise.
