We are a global community of 7,000 brilliant communications professionals serving the public across the United Kingdom and internationally: from Whitehall to Whitehaven, Inverness to Cardiff and Belfast – we work in all regions of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and across the globe, supporting and promoting the work of 21 ministerial departments, 21 non-ministerial departments and over 300 agencies and other public bodies
The GCS mission is to deliver world-class public service communications which support ministers’ priorities, enable the efficient and effective operation of public services, and improve people’s lives. It delivers national and international campaigns, life-saving communication and public information.
In our ambition to unify government communications, a programme of reform known as Reshaping of GCS has been embarked upon. The result will be the provision of more effective, innovative, and efficient communications, delivering the Government’s priorities with one voice.
In order to lead this newly restructured service, we are looking for a Chief Executive (CE). As head of the communications profession within the Civil Service, the CE work closely with the Downing Street Director of Communications and the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesperson to ensure departmental communications activity is both aligned and co-ordinated with the PM’s priorities. You will coordinate and lead the GCS annual communications strategy, using insight and data to define cross Government priorities for communications and resources and to maximise the impact for Government. You will be expected to put digital at the heart of what we do, driving strategy to engage and reach all our audiences internationally and domestically across the whole of the UK.
The CE will be a communications professional possessing an outstanding track record of providing strong and visible collaborative and coalition-building leadership with a proven ability to develop a motivated, engaged, diverse and high performing workforce. A thought leader and source of expertise and innovation, they will have highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills, establishing credibility with ease across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders.
